How to Start Meditating: A Gentle 7-Day Guide for Beginners

Nirvan Team · 2026-11-05 · 2 min read

Start with five minutes a day, sitting comfortably and resting your attention on the breath. When the mind wanders, notice it kindly and come back. Consistency matters far more than length.

What meditation really is

Meditation is not about stopping thoughts. It is the practice of placing your attention somewhere on purpose, noticing when it drifts, and bringing it back without judging yourself. Each return is one repetition, like lifting a light weight for the mind.

Traditions across India and the world describe the same thing in different words: dhyana, sitting, contemplation, simran. The common thread is gentle, repeated attention.

How to sit

  • Sit on a chair, a cushion or the edge of your bed. Your back upright but not stiff.
  • Rest your hands on your thighs or in your lap. Let your shoulders drop.
  • Close your eyes, or rest your gaze softly on the floor in front of you.
  • Take three slow breaths with a slightly longer out-breath to settle.

A 7-day plan

  • Day 1 – 5 minutes of breath awareness: feel the air at the nostrils or the rise of the belly.
  • Day 2 – 5 minutes, counting breaths from 1 to 10, then starting again.
  • Day 3 – 7 minutes of a body scan, moving attention slowly from head to feet.
  • Day 4 – 7 minutes of loving-kindness: silently wish yourself and others well.
  • Day 5 – 8 minutes of mantra or Naam: repeat a word like Om, So Hum or Waheguru softly in the mind.
  • Day 6 – 10 minutes of breath awareness, noticing the small pause after each out-breath.
  • Day 7 – 10 minutes of just sitting, letting sounds, sensations and thoughts come and go.

What to do when your mind is busy

A busy mind is normal, especially at the start. Instead of fighting it, label what happens with one soft word, such as 'thinking', 'planning' or 'worry', and return to the breath. Some days you will return a hundred times. That is still meditation.

If sitting still feels hard, try walking meditation or a guided session with a calm voice, which gives the mind something gentle to follow.

When to meditate

Choose a time you can keep: just after waking, before lunch, or before sleep. Linking it to something you already do, like brushing your teeth or making tea, helps it become a habit.

Questions people ask

How long should a beginner meditate?

Five to ten minutes a day is plenty to begin. It is better to sit for five minutes every day than for an hour once a week.

Is it okay to meditate lying down?

Yes, especially for body scans or yoga nidra. If you tend to fall asleep, sit up instead, unless sleep is the goal.

What is the easiest meditation technique?

Breath awareness is the simplest: notice the breath going in and out, and come back to it whenever the mind wanders.
